Some of the most common phishing emails purport to be from the fraud prevention departments of PayPal or the FDIC, as well as Facebook administrators asking users to “verify” their information. The New York Times writes that, although phishing scams are more prevalent than ever, zero liability guarantees are more or less standard for any financial services firm that allows web access. This means that any money lost to successful phishing attacks will be refunded by the …

Social networking websites have become must visit sites for a great many Internet users. If you are such a person then you probably find that you check your social networking accounts more than your e-mail accounts! In fact, social networking has become a daily activity for millions of Internet users. People have loved Facebook since the day it was launched and that is the reason why, within a span of few years, millions of people have registered to the Facebook network. Here are a few links to some of the best articles I’ve come across on my internet travels this week – ———————————————————————————————– Its a total hoax but this story about Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s new house is a good read – apparently it’s shaped like a snail ! ———————————————————————————————– The Register has uncovered a new tactic which may soon be seen in all those emails you get from ‘your bank’. Whilst directing people to a fake website that looks like their bank is nothing new this new tactic incorporates ‘live chat’ into the mix, unsurprisingly with a fraud investigator who needs the answers to your secret security questions. ———————————————————————————————– Sans.org asks why fake antivirus programs are so successful? The answer, it would seem, is all in the presentation . Oh, that and the fact that they make the scammers a boat load of cash

Earlier today social networking site Facebook and micro-blogging service Twitter were both hit by DDoS attacks. I’ve heard that the service on Facebook was significantly slowed and Twitter was totally inaccessible for a couple of hours and too slow to use effectively for a few hours after that too. Both Twitter and Facebook believe that their services were hit by a Denial of Service attack, meaning that their servers were bombarded with data with the express intention of bringing them to a standstill.

August 5th, 2009 — Scam, World Scams
Heres some great news about micro-blogging site Twitter that I think many people had been waiting months to hear – The popular social site has now begun filtering links that lead to well-known malware sites. This change was noted by security researchers on Monday but thus far I have not seen any official confirmation from Twitter themselves. The new tactic has been put into place in order to prevent users of the service from accidentally finding themselves on sites that contain malware or other suspect programs or exploits. Twitter has probably been pushed into taking such action because of a number of attacks which have targeted the site recently
